To Teach, Or Not To Teach?
To teach, or not to teach?
That is the question –
And after witnessing your prickly display
With your substitute last week,
I may or may not be on the fence.
Is it nobler to take up your novel
And succumb to literary tyranny
Or fight against this outrage
To preserve your concept of “respect”?
To sit, to read, to implore….
Or to stage a mutiny upon the classroom floor?
I see the agony of the choice color your brow.
The dilemma is intense.
After all, this little biddy is so out-of-touch,
She probably thinks that Pluto is still a planet.
Dammit! You won’t take that tone.
Not from your homeboy,
Not from that cute blonde in first period,
And certainly not from a senior citizen in a mauve cardigan!
You are “livid” – Erm…. That is:
Enraged, mad as a hornet, or, if you prefer:
Pissed….
You feel like you’ve been dissed
And there is nothing worse in your world
Than disrespect.
So you let her have it!
You pile upon her shoulders the anger
That has built throughout your academic life.
She is the enemy;
Annihilation is key.
In her face, you see
All the people who let you down,
The disparity of your race,
And the frustration of your troubled youth.
Can I give you a word of advice?
Stop seeing “the man” in every pale face;
Start seeing the potential in your own.
Stop frontin’.
Harness your passion;
Put your tough mind into action.
“Every problem you had before this day
Is now done.”1
Has no one told you?
You are the Master of your Fate.
So put your big-kid pants on.
You’ve only got to deal with this lady
For another forty minutes.
Whereas, I will maneuver such episodes
For another forty years.
No, I’m not crazy.
Or maybe I am.
Would me having a questionable mental state
Beseech you to behave?
I’m kidding!
But really, sit down.

This piece regards a heated moment between one of my freshmen boys and a substitute teacher.
Mercedes,
ReplyDeleteHave you ever considered becoming a slam poet? This has SO much energy and passion bursting from it, that you completely blew me away. It has the energy of rap, the style, grace, and refinement of a poem. It comes from the heart and speaks to the mind. Referencing "Pluto" and "disrespect," parodying Shakespeare, and quoting from Kanye? What a mouthful! What a fantastic job! You have a hidden talent for words, and I'm not just saying that as a fluffy "thank you" post.
Mercedes,
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with Nathan. When I heard you read this to us in our mini-feather circle today, I thought "slam poetry at its finest!" It made me smile. You make me smile. Your writings never cease to amaze me. Also, I love how you take charge in the end and tell the student to "put [their] big-kid pants on" and how you said, "but seriously, sit down." I love it! Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful piece. And I agree with Nathan that you have a hidden talent for words. ^_^
I'm all about hearing something rather than reading it, but this one jumps out from the page all by itself. I'm really glad I got to hear you read it though, because that adds a whole new dimension to the writing. The intensity you put into it and the dramatics are all so well placed that they seem almost natural. The best compliment I can give is to say that this is truly YOU. I talk to you when ever I see you and the intensity and love for education is not just a show you put on paper, but it's really the way you behave everyday. I loved it Ms. Spears, and can't wait to hear the second genre reflection!
ReplyDeleteMercedes,
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this unique piece! Although I did not get to hear you read it, the details and form used are fantastic and set the tone so well that I was able to imagine the poem as a performance. What a way you have with words...truly impressive. I enjoyed seeing the multicultural ties woven in delicately as well.
You should consider publishing this piece (beyond this blog)!
Sincerely,
Nancy Best
Mercedes!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this! Your style and creativity really shine in this poem! You weren't afraid to be blunt, which I really appreciate! The fragmentation of your poem also shows how much thoughtful effort you put into this genre reflection! Reading this, I could hear you performing it for me. You are so enthusiastic, which is an inspiration to me! I wonder if you plan on giving your students creative license on an assignment such as this...? If any genre can be considered "free," it's poetry! And you scored a winner with this genre reflection! Thank you!!
Thank you to everyone who commented on my GR! I appreciate your thoughts and support. I have loved poetry since I was in elementary school and I get excited whenever I write a new piece. You wanna know something crazy? I had never even heard of slam poetry until CI 454E! I will definitely be looking into it. :)
ReplyDeleteMrs. Leighton: I will definitely give my students creative license on assignments in poetry and possibly in other styles of writing. Writing is so personal and so intense; I will get to know my students through their writing. Can you tell that I get excited over composition? :D I absolutely NERD out over writing assignments.
Okay, awesome. Please share this with lots of other people because others need to experience it! I wish I could have heard you read it because the energy coming just off this page is inspiring. Your creativity is above and beyond in this piece, and as a side note, your comments in class are always great! Your students will love learning writing with you. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWow, Mercedes, this is incredible! I am very impressed with your creativity and with the story you tell through it. Thank you for sharing this!
ReplyDeleteMercedes -
ReplyDeleteI LOVE LOVE LOVE this! (I know, that's a lot of love!) You are a very talented writer. I was very impressed when I heard you read this during our feather circle. I love the blunt manner in which you chose to write and how the lines flow together. I agree with Nancy - the way you tied in multicultural aspects was amazing! Fantastic job, and thank you for sharing this!
